KPMG HQ, London, UK Client KPMG Architect Swanke Hayden Connell Architects M&E engineers AECOM Lighting design Light Bureau acdc products Evolution, Magna & Storm Summary Boasting an impressive 400,000 sq ft set across 14 storeys, KPMG’s new HQ at Canary Wharf is now home to over 4000 members of staff, all benefiting from cutting-edge, awarding winning lighting in their workplace. Energy-efficiency, low consumption rates and lifetime were all major considerations in terms of the lighting for this project to guarantee reduced maintenance requirements for this state-of-the-art office building which is one of the first office projects to use LED in the majority downlight applications. Design brief Light Bureau developed a lighting design solution that met KPMG’s brief for permeable space with exceptionally high quality finish. Energy efficiency was of prime importance to this project which is why acdc’s long-life, low energy LED luminaires were selected as the preferred lighting choice for this state-of-the-art office building, including the conference rooms, reception areas and hallways. acdc’s LED solution A combination of acdc Evolution and Storm LED downlights are situated throughout the office spaces offering excellent colour rendering in the excess of 90 CRI, 50,000 hours lifetime to 70% lumen maintenance and importantly Part L compliancy. acdc’s meticulous dual binning process equally ensured colour consistency throughout the building. Evolution works with the LED Engine 50, which produces an amazing 1200 lumens in warm white whilst consuming 40% less energy than the halogen equivalent. Amy Weatherley, Project Manager explains - “because the scheme uses almost entirely low-energy light sources, maintenance intervals will be few and far between. However, the real skill is that throughout all the specialist areas we have only used only 8 different type of lamp source, including LED’s – quite an achievement for such a large project”. Paul Nulty, formally director of Light Bureau and now founder of Paul Nulty Lighting Design explains why the acdc product range was selected for the project: “We opted to use LED over incandescent sources because we wanted a solution with longevity that required limited maintenance. LED's enabled us to retain a direction source with a punch of light that delivered a warm tone. With LED being (relatively) new technology we needed a manufacturer that could deliver a reliable product, which was technically superior, backed up with customer support.acdc’s LED downlight range ticked all of the boxes for us.” acdc’s bespoke Dali dimming control provided an additional level of ground breaking technology to this unique lighting project. Dali dimming addresses each and every LED fitting within the scheme providing an unprecedented central control opportunity throughout the building including the flexibility to offer an emergency solution negating the requirement for additional emergency luminaires. This expertly designed scheme was a well-deserved winner of the Lighting Design Awards ‘Workplace Lighting Award’ and was a considerable factor to the project being awarded BREEAM Excellent rating - the world’s leading design and assessment method for sustainable buildings.
