Mercedes SLK - Super Lighting Koncept
This Mercedes Showroom in London is the latest to receive the Cold Cathode treatment from ACDC Lighting Systems. Located at the convergence of King William Street and Cannon Street, this site holds a prominent position with both the traffic flow and location of the underground station.
The building has been finished in a curved glass wall, and it was the aim of lighting designers Light + Design Associates to create a focal point which worked with this shape and gave a high visual impact at night. “It was a natural choice to use concealed cold cathode Covelite on the external radius of the ceiling, to float the ceiling planar off the main ceiling line,” commented Lee Prince from Light + Design Associates.
Another intricate detail on this project were the elliptical ‘pods’ at the centre of the circular dropped ceiling. These deep seated light pods were developed to highlight the car on the stage and to eliminate glare. The pods housed a dual light source, one carrying out the functional element of lighting the car, the other to compliment the outer glow of edge light, while creating an inner glow within the pods. A brilliant blue cold cathode source was used throughout to compliment the Mercedes branding.
Gareth Frankland from ACDC Lighting Systems remembers the project well. “The circular coffer was relatively straightforward and ideal for our plug and play CoveliteTM system, but the intricate and exact curving required for the 15mm recess in the ellipses allowed no margin for error. These challenges were however overcome, and the whole scheme looks fantastic.”
